Entrepreneur turns negative experience into positive business model
Simple Computer Repair brings simple answers to technology problems

LAS VEGAS – In the past, knowing a good mechanic was gold. Today, people covet good computer repair experiences much the same way, sharing their diamond-in-the-rough IT professionals with friends and family.

Jim Brock conceived Simple Computer Repair after a negative experience as a customer at a big box retailer where he witnessed speculative diagnoses, geek speak, bait and switch and a general lack of empathy from IT professionals who used their knowledge against the customer rather than to help them.

“Now everyone can feel like they know someone they can trust in the computer repair industry,” said Jim Brock, president of Simple Computer Repair. “We’re here to help and make a typically confusing process much easier.”

After selling one of his businesses to Nextel, Brock officially retired at age 38, but settling down into a typical retirement wasn’t his style. He enjoys building successful businesses, and in 2008, to fill the void he recognized in the marketplace, he opened Simple Computer Repair based on three principles: no guessing, no opinions, and simple answers and explanations in layman’s terms.

Brock aimed for Simple Computer Repair to be the referral customers covet because of their positive, easy experience. He was confident he could create a neighborhood computer repair store that provided a clear service and didn’t scare customers – from the simple computer user to small- and mid-size businesses in need of IT services.

“Many small- to mid-size companies have eliminated their in-house IT position, thereby eliminating a full-time salary. Now, they call us and only pay when there is a need,” Brock said. “With a team of technicians, we are able to respond to an emergency service call in a timely manner, minimizing the time a computer or network is unable to generate revenue.”

To begin, he set up the Simple Computer Repair business model to provide free diagnoses with no repair, no charge; flat rates for repair labor and parts and house/office calls with a specific appointment time, not a window. Also, technicians work on repairs in an assembly line style, allowing each tech to specialize and increasing the company’s capacity by 30 percent. All work is done at the work table in the center of the store for transparency and to decrease potential customer privacy concerns.

After spending three-and-a-half years getting the recipe just right, Simple Computer Repair has two Las Vegas locations (Summerlin and Henderson) as well as one licensed Phoenix location. Plans for more licensed locations are in the works.

Simple Computer Repair opened in 2008 and provides repair services for all makes and models of desktops and laptops, Apple iPhones, iPads and iPods; game consoles and flat screen TVs. There are two locations in the Las Vegas area, including the Summerlin location at 5130 S. Fort Apache Road, Ste. 263 and the Henderson location at 1000 N. Green Valley Parkway, and one location in Arizona at 13050 W. Rancho Santa Fe #B-5 in Avondale, near Phoenix.
